Toldot

📜 The Story

Parshat Toldot tells the story of Isaac and Rebecca's family. Isaac prayed to Hashem for twenty years because Rebecca could not have children, and Hashem answered his prayer. Rebecca became pregnant with twins, and she felt them pushing and struggling inside her. When she asked Hashem why this was happening, He told her that two great nations were inside her, and that the older one would end up serving the younger one.

When the twins were born, the first one came out red and hairy, so he was named Esau. Right after him came his brother, holding tightly onto Esau's heel, so he was named Jacob. As the boys grew up, Esau became a skilled hunter who loved the outdoors, while Jacob was a quiet, thoughtful person who loved to learn and stayed close to the family tents.

One day Esau came home from the field feeling very hungry, and he saw Jacob cooking a pot of red lentil stew. Esau asked for some, and Jacob offered to trade the stew for Esau's birthright, the special honor and responsibility of the firstborn son. Esau, caring more about his hunger than his future, agreed and sold his birthright for bread and lentil stew.

Later, during a famine, Isaac moved his family to Gerar. There, just like his father Abraham had once done, Isaac dug wells for water, and he even reopened the very same wells his father Abraham had dug, giving them the same names. When Isaac grew old and his eyesight became weak, he wanted to give his special blessing to Esau. But Rebecca knew that Jacob deserved the blessing, so she helped Jacob dress in Esau's clothing and cover his arms with goat skins so he would feel hairy like his brother.

Isaac blessed Jacob with the blessing of the land, plenty of grain and wine, and leadership over his brothers, thinking he was blessing Esau. When Esau found out, he was very upset, and Rebecca sent Jacob away to her brother Laban's house, both to keep him safe from Esau's anger and to find a good wife there. Before Jacob left, Isaac blessed him again, giving him the blessing of Abraham to inherit the land of Canaan, continuing the special role passed down in their family.
